Most coastal towns will have a beach, and you probably can’t go wrong with most of them. A few popular beaches on the Pacific coast are Conchal, Flamingo, and Tamarindo. They all offer beautiful views and various beach activities.

If you are on the Caribbean coast Playa Cocles, Chiquita, or Manzanillo are great options.

2. Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal Volcano National Park is where the most active volcano in Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano, is located. In recent years the lava flow hasn’t been visible, but the volcano is still active. The park also includes the Chato Volcano which is less active.

While the Arenal Volcano is the main attraction at the national park, there are several other reasons why this is one of the top things to do in Costa Rica. The park is home to waterfalls, hot springs, and hiking trails. There are both short and long trails depending on your preferences, and you can opt for a guided tours.

Pay attention during your hike for a chance to see some of the wildlife. There are monkeys, jaguars, deer, snakes, birds, and more!

3. Visit San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose is the largest city and capital of Costa Rica. It is located in the middle of the country. The city boasts a high quality of life and is one of the safest cities in the region.

5. Manuel Antonio National Park – Wildlife, Hiking, and Beach Access

Manuel Antonio National Park is on the Pacific coast southwest of San Jose. The park is on the smaller side, but has plenty of great things to do. It includes rainforest, beaches, and a coral reef. The white sand beaches provide stunning views and can be a great way to relax after a hike.

The forest is home to many animals including sloths, monkeys, iguanas, and more! You can even see dolphins occasionally when looking out into the water.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located in the northwest region of Costa Rica, and is named after the nearby town of Monteverde.

The reserve boasts lots of biodiversity as it is extremely rich in plant life and varying animal species. This makes it a must see destination for any Costa Rican vacation. It’s popular with scientists and tourists alike. The area includes well kept trails, suspension bridges, and zip lines.

7. Treat yourself with a Costa Rican hot spring

Costa Rica is the home of many active volcanoes which results in hot springs, due to the underground thermal activity. This has led to resorts and spas dedicated to the rejuvenating power of the hot springs.

What better way is there to spend a vacation than treating yourself? There are great spas in the Guanacaste and Arenal regions. Additionally, other parts of the country have them as well due to the high number of volcanoes.

Both coasts are popular among surfers. Learning to surf can be a fun way to spend a day on the beach. Seeing the other surfers will make you want to at least give it a try. You might just find a new hobby to help you relax.

1. Book longer stays to get discounts with Airbnb

One good way to save money on Airbnb is to book longer stays. Obviously this isn’t as useful if you only plan to take a short trip, but can be useful if you are staying somewhere longer. Longer stays are nice because you get to become more familiar with an area. It’s especially nice if you have a host that gives recommendations on local attractions.

Booking by the week or month can often include discounts. The amount depends on the host but can sometimes be as much as 10-20%. The amount varies but it certainly can make a difference on the total lodging cost.

2. Reach out to Airbnb hosts to negotiate the rate

Airbnb hosts will sometimes provide additional discounts if you reach out and simply ask them. By clicking the ‘Contact Host’ button on a listing, you can send a polite message with details about your stay and whether or not they can provide a reduced rate. Remember to be very polite, and don’t be pushy if they say no. After all it is their home and they have a right to stick to whatever rate they think is fair. Plus, they might not have issues getting bookings at their full price, so they may not have a reason to provide discounts. On the flip side, they might be willing to provide a lower rate, so it’s sometimes worth asking.

This method can be more effective if you plan to stay for longer, and if you already have good reviews from hosts of previous Airbnb stays. Longer stays will help the host ensure they have more days booked, especially if it’s in the off-season or they are struggling to get bookings. Plus, positive reviews will give them comfort that you will be courteous guests. This is even more important if you are staying longer, since long term visitors tend to make themselves more at home. Hosts need confidence that guests won’t ruin their home, and a history of good reviews will help build trust.

If a host agrees to provide a special rate, they will send you a link with the discount applied. Use that link to place your booking to get the rate you agreed upon. Airbnb recommends that you always book through the site, instead of side deals with the home owner, so that you can utilize their customer service incase there are any issues.

On the app you can also click ‘I’m Flexible’ when selecting a location to search random destinations that have good deals. This can be a great way to take a spontaneous, affordable vacation. We like to use this feature to help us decide where to travel next to make budget conscious decisions.

Booking in the off season for a destination will often help you find lower rates. Many hosts struggle to secure bookings everyday in the off season, so they will reduce rates. You’ll also benefit from less crowds compared to the busy season in many locations.

This is also why the off season is a good time to try and reach out to hosts to request discounted rates if you’re looking for a long term stay. Again, not all host are willing to negotiate their rate, so remember to be polite and respect their decision.

4. Airbnb Refer a Host Program

At the time of writing this article it is possible to get a $200 referral credit if you refer a host to start using Airbnb. The host will have to sign up and list their place. You will receive the credit once the referred host completes their first qualifying stay.

Unfortunately, they stopped the former $50 referral program that was much easier. You used to be able to refer friends to use the service as guests, not hosts, and once new users completed a stay, you would receive the credit. It’s a little harder to get new users to become hosts, but if you know anyone interested, you could make some money to put towards your next trip.

5. Use Frequent Flyer Miles and Credit Card Points to save money with Airbnb

Many credit cards earn reward points for booking travel. While many of them are partnered with traditional hotels, some of them will work on Airbnb bookings, so you can earn reward points for your booking. While it’s not a direct discount, it is a way to save money if you get cash back for your points. You will want to check the terms of your credit card to see if yours qualifies.

Also, some frequent flyer miles will also let you purchase gift cards with your points, which you might be able to use on an Airbnb booking.

Costa Rica is full of great beaches on either the Pacific Ocean or Caribbean Sea side of the country. Both coasts offer great surfing, diving, and more. Guanacaste is a popular region to stay on the Pacific side of the country. It includes great beaches like Conchal, Flamingo, and Tamarindo. Another great location on the Pacific side is the Manuel Antonio National Park. There is a great beach and rainforest within the park giving you a chance to see a variety of wildlife.

Alternatively, Puerto Viejo has more of a laid back vibe on the Caribbean side. It has great surfing and to the north you’ll find Cahuita National Park, which includes a protected coral reef.

Puerto Rico has great beaches as well, and many of them can be reached easily from San Juan. Surfers often go to Puerto Rico’s west coast to experience top notch surfing. Also, beach bums have solid options in, or near, San Juan with beaches like Isla Verde, Atlantic Beach, or Ocean Park. A day trip to Flamenco Beach is worthwhile if you’re looking for a larger, more photogenic beach.

Costa Rica vs Puerto Rico: Food

This is another category where it’s really hard to judge, because they both offer such delicious cuisine.

Costa Rican food is similar to other Latin American countries as it keeps some of the staples like rice and beans. It’s known for a lot of fresh ingredients and utilizes a lot of fruits. Due in part to increased travel, and the growing expat population there are many more Americanized options than before.

Puerto Rican food, like other Caribbean islands, is typically a little more mild and includes things like plantains, arroz con pollo, and empanadas. One of my favorite side dishes in Puerto Rico is mofongo (see picture). It’s a mashed plantain dish that tastes wonderful.

It is considered safe to drink tap water in Puerto Rico as they use similar purification standards as the US. People have differing opinions on whether or not it’s ok to drink tap water in Costa Rica. The general consensus seems to be that tap water in urban areas is treated and tends to be safe, but rural areas are more hit or miss. If you’re ever unsure about the water where you’re staying, regardless of the country you’re in, it might be best to stick to bottled water. Better safe than sorry!

Costa Rica vs Puerto Rico: Activities

The activities available to you will vary greatly depending on where you stay in either of these destinations. Most of the resorts or tourist cities in Costa Rica will have activities other than just the beach nearby. If you’re in the right area they may have rainforests, local shops, deep sea fishing, and more.

A few of the top Costa Rica sightseeing destinations are Arenal Volcano, Tabacon Hot Springs, and hiking in one of the great national parks like Corcovado, Manuel Antonio, and Tortuguero.

Puerto Rico offers a tremendous variety of activities and everything is really accessible. You can relax on the beach, fish, scuba dive, tour the Bacardi rum distillery, or even hike in the rainforest. Puerto Rico is home to El Yunque National Forest, which is the only tropical rainforest managed by the United States National Forest Service. It’s only an hour drive from San Juan, so it’s perfect for a day trip especially if you’ve never seen a rainforest.

The ease of renting a car and navigating Puerto Rico on your own definitely make it stand out since you can do self guided activities. We always feel very safe and comfortable exploring new areas, while still using common sense of course.

It’s possible to find cheap flights and hotels for both of these destinations. We’ll break down the cost of travel a little for each destination below. Keep in mind prices vary based on several factors including quality of hotel, if it’s the busy season or not, personal travel preferences, etc.

Puerto Rico Vacation Price

The sample pricing below is based on our previous travels during peak season and might be different based on a number of factors. It should just be used as a rough outline to start forming a cost of travel budget. This pricing is based on a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Hotel Cost: The quality of the hotel is going to be a determining factor in the nightly rate. An average hotel for a couple costs between $150-200 per night in San Juan during the busy season. Depending on the neighborhood you can find something cheaper, or much more expensive. Budget travelers that don’t mind hostels can find rooms for $20-30 per night.

We use Airbnb when we go to Puerto Rico. It’s typically been cheaper than a hotel and we get the perk of using the host’s knowledge of local attractions and restaurants. On our last trip we stayed in a San Juan Airbnb in Condado, right next to the beach, for $107 per night. It was right next to a bunch of great restaurants, a grocery store, and it was more spacious than a hotel room.

Puerto Rico Food Cost: Plan to spend around $20-30 per day, per person at modest restaurants. You can save money by grocery shopping and making some of your own meals, or you can spend much more by going to high end restaurants.

Puerto Rico Transportation Cost: If you use Uber, taxis, or public transportation estimate to spend around $10 per day. We love walking as a great way to get to know a city and it helps save money. That or you can rent a car for reasonable rates in San Juan.

Costa Rica Vacation Price

Again, this sample pricing should just be used as a rough outline to start forming a travel budget. Pricing will fluctuate greatly depending on if you’re in a touristy area, as well as the time of year you travel. The pricing below is mostly based on staying in mainstream hotels and resorts. You can definitely make the trip much cheaper if you stay away from hotel chains or all inclusive resorts.

Costa Rica Hotel Cost: The quality of the hotel is going to be a determining factor in the nightly rate. All inclusive resorts are going to have a higher price and tend to be around $150-250 per night, per person. However, if you stay at regular hotels you can get a room for closer to $90-150 per night.

You can definitely find more expensive resorts if you want to splurge, or less expensive options. We recommend you do a quick search for hotels around the dates you expect to travel to get a better idea of the actual costs.

Costa Rica Food Cost: Food prices vary a lot in Costa Rica depending on if you’re eating at smaller restaurants, or an American themed restaurant that cater more to expats and tourists. Depending on your eating habits, consider budgeting $30-50 per day, per person. This cost can be greatly reduced if breakfast is included at your hotel, you eat like a local, or grocery shop to make some of your meals.

Costa Rica Transportation Cost: Price conscious travelers can opt for public transportation as a cost friendly option. Buses are the popular choice to cut down on cost. Taxis can add up if you plan to sight see a lot, so renting a car might be the most cost effective option. Car rentals will vary, but tend to be around $40-75 per day.

Costa Rica vs Puerto Rico Price Conclusion

As a whole, the cost comparison will depend on your preferences. Both can have very similar pricing depending on your hotel, transportation, and food choices. If you travel during peak season and stay in high end all-inclusive resorts the prices might be high. Alternatively, if you are willing to hunt for deals and make some of your own meals, both can be very affordable vacation options.

It’s important to remember that everyone has different travel preferences. While this is a perfect Ireland itinerary for us, your perfect itinerary might require some changes, so feel free to add or remove things that you might not enjoy. Have safe and happy travels!

7 Day Ireland Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Galway, Ireland by air or car

We fly into Dublin because the flights are usually less expensive and then drive to Galway since it only takes a couple of hours. From our experience, the roads are a little wider near Dublin, which means it’s a good way to ease yourself into driving, if you haven’t driven in Ireland before. If you prefer, you can just fly directly to Galway.

If you do choose to drive from Dublin, you can stop in Athlone about halfway to Galway for a meal and a walk around town. Depending on the time, Sean’s Bar might be open. They claim to be the oldest pub in Ireland. It’s a bit touristy, but if you’re already in the area, you might enjoy it.

If you’re not too jet lagged, you can also drive just south out of town to Clonmacnoise which is a ruined monastery. You’ll also be treated to views of the beautiful countryside.

Once you arrive in Galway, check into your hotel and consider a nap! The rest of your day can be spent walking around town and enjoying one of the many great bars and restaurants. Depending on the time of year, the Christmas Market might be open.

Day 2: Connemara National Park

The drive up to Connemara is stunning and the park offers great hiking options for all skill levels. If you are more adventurous you can hike to the top of Diamond Hill (Elevation: ~1,500 ft) where you’ll be rewarded with a great view of the surrounding area, and depending on visibility you might be able to see Kylemore Abbey in the distance.

Visitors can also opt for a shorter, more leisurely hike near the peak, but not up it. It still offers good views and will save your knees for the rest of the trip.

Afterwards, it’s only a short drive down the road to Kylemore Abbey to see the castle built in the 1800s and the monastery founded by Benedictine Nuns.

Day 3: Travel to Killarney, Ireland – See Cliffs of Moher on the way!

Killarney is a few hour drive from Galway and is home to Killarney National Park. On the way down it’s worth stopping at the iconic Cliffs of Moher. A visit to Ireland isn’t complete without taking in the beautiful cliffs. They extend for 14km along the Atlantic Ocean, and on a clear day will have you mesmerized.

Killarney is a smaller town which offers a nice change of pace from Galway or Dublin. For dinner, take in some live music and traditional food at one of the local pubs.

Day 4: Killarney National Park and Muckross Abbey

Killarney National Park has a lot to offer and several ways to see it. Torc Mountain is relatively short hike, albeit quite steep and potentially difficult for beginners, but provides a great view at the end. Additionally, Torc Waterfall is a perfect spot to get pictures and can be reached without hiking up the mountain.

Another great way to see the park is by horse. There are a number of riding stables, including Killarney Riding Stables, that offer short or long rides through the park. The guides do a great job of providing information about the park, and accommodate beginner or experienced riders. Keep your eye out for deer and other wildlife!

While you’re visiting the park check out Muckross Abbey for a chance to see more ruins. Nearby you can also get close to the lake for some nice pictures of the water and mountains.

Killarney is without a doubt one of our favorite places in Ireland and should be considered for any Ireland itinerary.

Day 5: Dingle Peninsula

There are a number of places along the Atlantic coast if you want more iconic scenery. We recommend the Dingle Peninsula. There are several islands off of the coast and the town is full of colorful shops and houses.

Also, if the weather is good you can drive through Conor Pass for views of the Peninsula.

Day 6 and 7: Dublin – Guinness, Library of Trinity College, and more!

We recommend spending a couple of days in Dublin if you’re a fan of cities. Dublin has a long list of great sites that you can easily fill two days seeing. I’ll list a few, but depending on your interests, there is likely something for everyone.

Beer drinkers might be interested in a tour of the Guinness Storehouse to learn the history behind the famous Irish beer. Alternatively, if you’re more of a whiskey fan consider the Old Jamison Distillery.

The Library of Trinity College is in my opinion one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. It’s likely you’ve seen pictures of it, but it’s worth seeing it in person. History lovers can also see St. Patrick’s Cathedral or Dublin Castle.

One of the most popular tourist bars is The Temple Bar. Enjoy a drink or if it’s too busy, check out one of many other bars and restaurants nearby.

What is PalFish?

PalFish is an app for Apple iOS and Android phone and tablets that allow teachers to chat with students online for money. It’s easy to use and helps the students learn English online in a remote setting. 

Is PalFish a scam?

No, Palfish is not a scam. It’s a great way to make money online. They have a section in the app to show how much money you’ve made and they pay out once a month. We’ve used it without having any issues getting paid.

How much does PalFish pay?

There are two parts to this answer. If you do the official kid’s course, teachers make around $15 per hour. That’s not a bad rate for getting to pick your own schedule and teach from anywhere. Plus, $15 goes a long way in places like Southeast Asia. This sort of gig will keep you traveling longer.

If you do PalFish Freetalk you will get to set your own rate. Most PalFish Freetalk teachers report making between $10-18 per hour, but some claim to be making much more. Teachers have reported making $25-$30 per hour. This path can be a good one, but it all depends on what people are willing to pay as you’ll have to build your own following.

Can I use my laptop to teach on PalFish?

No, the PalFish app only works on smartphones and tablets. Check the app listing in your device’s app store for details on what hardware and software versions they support.

What is the difference between the PalFish Official Kid’s Course and PalFish Freetalk?

The PalFish Official Kids Course is where you teach students between the ages of 3-12 years old English using lessons provided by PalFish. One of the perks is that you don’t have to spend time coming up with your own lesson plans since they have already built them. The lessons are short, interactive modules meant to teach a little at a time, while also holding the interest of the student.

PalFish Freetalk allows students of all ages to book time with teachers to talk about anything. There aren’t any prebuilt lessons as it’s mostly time to have a free flowing conversation. Many teachers spend the time asking the students about their interests and hobbies to help them learn through spontaneous conversations.

Does PalFish require a TEFL certificate?

Yes, if you want to participate in the Official Kids Course. PalFish is very accessible as it only requires a TEFL certification, not a bachelors degree. I was able to take a 120 hour TEFL program and then was immediately accepted by PalFish afterwards. I do have experience working with children and teaching them through interaction, but not in a formal classroom setting.

However, if you only do PalFish Free Talk a TEFL certificate is not required.

1. TEFL Pros

This is the TEFL course that I took. The 120 hour course is an accredited program through Accreditat. It isn’t the cheapest course as it costs $350 but it is very thorough.

2. International TEFL Academy

The International TEFL Academy is one of the highest rated TEFL programs in the world. They offer a variety of courses, including in-person or online classes to match students’ learning preferences. If you’re serious about teaching English as a second language committing to a program like theirs might be for you.

The main drawback is the price tag. Their classes are generally more expensive since they are very good. You’ll probably want to make sure you’re really interested in this line of work before signing up.

3. International TEFL and TESOL Training

Another highly rated program is the International TEFL and TESOL training. They have been doing online and in-person classes for over 20 years making them one of the most experienced organizations offering TEFL certification. They offer a variety of courses that will help meet any budgetary constraints you may have. 

Plus, they offer specialized courses like teaching young learners or teaching business English.

Getting Started

A. Sign-up for Payoneer Before You Setup the PalFish App

Payoneer is a US-based financial company that provides online money transfers and digital payment services. This account is how PalFish will pay you every month. It’s secure and easy to use. When PalFish pays out our earnings every month into Payoneer, we transfer it to our other bank accounts for a small processing fee. PalFish made changes to now allow regular bank accounts, but I’ve found it’s still easier to just use Payoneer.

1. Download Payoneer – You can download the Payoneer app in your device’s app store and then set up an account. It can take 1-4 business days to have your account confirmed on Payoneer and will need your account information when you sign up for PalFish. Once your account is confirmed it’s easy to set up and use going forward. Every month on payday I’m able to easily transfer the funds into other bank accounts.

After it has been set up you can move on to the next step.

B. Download and Setup the PalFish App

1. Download the app from the Apple iOS App Store or Google Play Store, depending on the type of device you own.

2. Sign up for an account on PalFish
3. Enter basic information – The app will request you to upload a professional picture with a white background. However, you might want to change this after you pass the interview process. I changed it to a picture with a little more color, so it stands out.

4. Text intro – This is where you should talk about your skills, experience, teaching style, etc. Don’t be afraid to use emoji’s! Actually use as many as you can. It is eye-catching for potential students. If you are from somewhere where emojis are regarded as childish/unprofessional, like I am, then this may take some getting used to.
5. Audio intro – These should be short. Most are about 1 to 2 minutes long and include your name, age, where you’re from, hobbies, showing your classroom and props, your teaching style, etc.
6. Upload official identification, like your passport, to confirm your nationality
7. Upload teaching certificate photo – Type the certificate number in the text box
8. Add a valid account to receive payments – PalFish recommends using a Payoneer account. PalFish will withdraw money from your ” wallet “ in the app and transfer it to your Payoneer account. You can then easily transfer it to your primary bank account for a small fee. it is a flat rate, not a percentage of the amount to be transferred. 
9. Submit – You should get your results within three working days. However when I went through this process it took almost a week, due to the current situation of the world with COVID-19 and the influx of people seeking online employment.

C. Complete the interview and quiz

1. Interview – Once you pass the basic information section, you receive a notification in the PalFish app. PalFish does not send out emails to applicants.
2. Upon opening the app, you will have the option to schedule an interview. It is a time slot in which you will record a demo class. Note that it’s not a standard interview with a real person, but just a recording that will be reviewed afterwards.
3. Book your interview time. After booking a time, you can enter the virtual class anytime before your scheduled session to preview the class material, practice teaching, and look over the TG (teachers guide) which will be at the bottom left-hand side of your screen to click on. It’s also a good idea to prepare 2-3 props that are relevant to the lesson material and use the preview time to get familiar with the interface. PalFish also strongly encourages you to use augmented reality (AR) in the classroom. Practice using these to get comfortable. Your demo class should be at least 15 minutes long. During your demo class since there isn’t anyone on the other end, you will be performing the activities of the student, as well as the teacher. 

When you exit the classroom it will automatically submit the recorded session. Note that when you exit, you might receive a warning that you will not get paid unless you stay for at least 25 minutes. This only applies to real classes after you are hired, not during the interview. As long as your interview session lasts at least 15 minutes, you will be ok.

Post Interview:

4. You should expect to receive your results within a few days. Again, it may be longer if there are a lot of applicants. YouTube has a lot of great videos of “how to pass your PalFish interview.
5. Quiz – After the interview, you will be notified through the PalFish app. You’ll be given a link to the PalFish official handbook and training materials. Read it over carefully. What I found out later is that the official handbook and training materials are basically their FAQs. I highly recommend screenshotting the information, because you won’t have access to it until you’re hired. After you pass the interview you only have 2 days to complete the quiz. It’s easy and you can try as many times as you want.
6. Certificate Verification – PalFish will verify your teaching certificate and let you know if you’re hired.
7. PalFish now has it’s new teachers complete PF1/PF2 preps (demo lessons, like the interview) before they are able to teach OKC (official kids course) trials. 

Note: After you successfully pass the interview stage and PF1/PF2 preps, classes will automatically be available for students and parents to book.

Additional FAQs

What should my PalFish classroom background look like?

Since everything is online your students are going to see a limited amount of space through your camera. You should have it brightly decorated with colorful shapes, letters, and numbers to create a fun environment for your students. A flag from your country, the PalFish logo, and your first name (Example: Teacher Susan) is also encouraged.

You can easily put together a simple background quickly for very little money. We made ours one afternoon with construction paper. Otherwise, if you’re creative you can make something much more detailed. Your students will appreciate creative decorations.

What type of headset should I use for PalFish?

A lot of teachers use the traditional call center headsets with a speaker over one ear and a microphone that extends in front of your face. We have actually been using Apple AirPods and haven’t had any issues or complaints. Most decent headsets will work, but if you already have AirPods (or an Android equivalent) you should be fine.

Is Puerto Rico Safe to Travel

Yes, overall we felt very safe in Puerto Rico. This is especially true if you’re spending most of your time in high volume travel areas like Condado, Old San Juan, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde.

In fact Puerto Rico’s crime rate, including violent crimes, is lower than some of the larger US states. The FBI reports that most serious crimes occur in low travel volume neighborhoods. If you don’t know the area well, or you don’t have a guide you can trust, remain in the well populated areas to maintain safety.

As is often the case when you are in tourist areas, you need to stay alert to avoid petty theft from pickpockets.

Stay Safe in Puerto Rico with these Tips

Basically every travel destination has some element of crime with very few exceptions. Puerto Rico is no different, and so it’s important that you remain aware of your surroundings especially in more populated areas, like San Juan.

General Safety Tips:

• Don’t leave valuable items unattended if you’re staying in a hostel. We always bring locks for our backpacks.
• Stay in reputable neighborhoods. If you’re unsure, ask your hotel concierge, hostel employees, or Airbnb hosts.
• Be careful in crowds that you don’t get pickpocketed.
• Don’t drink too much alone, or with people you just met.
• Remain aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

Puerto Rico Natural Disasters

Some of the biggest safety hazards in Puerto Rico are natural disasters. The island is in a primary location for hurricanes and earthquakes which is important to keep in mind when scheduling your trip. While Puerto Rico has mostly recovered from Hurricane Maria, there are still signs of the devastation, so you’ll want to schedule outside of hurricane season.

The best time to travel to Puerto Rico is from December to the end of April to avoid hurricane season. This timeframe works perfectly if you’re planning a winter vacation.

Puerto Rico is safe for solo, couple, or group travelers. Most tourists don’t encounter serious crime on a Puerto Rico vacation. Stay in good areas, use smart habits, and act respectfully towards others.

Best Puerto Rican Food Dishes

Mofongo

Mofongo consists of fried plantains mashed with salt, garlic, broth, and olive oil. It’s formed into a tight ball and is typically served with fried meat and soup. It’s usually offered as a side dish at restaurants, so you can add it to any meal.

As someone coming from the midwest I wasn’t sure what to think of mashed plantains, but Mofongo is now my favorite Puerto Rican food and I can never get enough of it.

Pasteles

Pasteles are like a Puerto Rican version of a tamale. The main ingredients include stock, green banana, squash, plantains and starch roots. They can also contain meat and other various ingredients.

Pasteles are especially popular around Christmas time. It’s a very common Puerto Rico holiday dish.

Asopao

Asopao is another Puerto Rican food spin on a familiar dish, Gumbo. The soup consists of shellfish, chorizo, chicken, rice, and other ingredients.

Like Pasteles, Asopao is a popular holiday dish and often served with plantain dumplings.

Arroz con Gandules

As I’m writing this I find myself unintentionally following a pattern of holiday oriented foods. Arroz con Gandules is yet another popular Christmas food in Puerto Rico. It can also be served for other special occasions.

It consists of rice, pigeon peas, and pork, cooked in the same pot with sofrito. Sofrito is commonly used when cooking rice in Puerto Rico and includes a variety of ingredients including recao (culantro – tropical herb), aji dulce (sweet peppers), pimientos, red bell peppers, red and green cubanelle peppers, yellow onions, garlic, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Aranitas

Aranitas are another great side dish or you can get them at kiosks from street vendors. They have a shape sort of resembling little spiders. Don’t let that deter you though, these little treats are delicious.

They are shredded green plantain fritters that are mixed with mashed garlic, cilantro and fried.

Best Puerto Rican Food – Top Restaurants

Now that you have a few items to look for on the menu you need to find the right local Puerto Rican restaurant. There are countless great restaurants, especially in bigger areas like San Juan, so you have plenty of options. Our recommendation is to not shy away from small restaurants, and venture away from tourist themed restaurants. Oftentimes the best food in any given area is at a restaurant where locals are willing to eat.

Bebo’s Cafe

Bebo’s Cafe is a great spot to try local foods. They have a big menu full of authentic Puerto Rican food. It’s a great lunch spot and was packed every time we went.

Don’t just judge it for the restaurant atmosphere and service. While the layout looks more like a large cafeteria with as many tables as they can fit, and the service was at island pace, the food was excellent.

Bebo’s is located in between Condado and Ocean Park in San Juan.

El Jibarito

El Jibarito is another great spot for local Puerto Rican food. You might have to wait for this popular venue, but the food is worth the wait.

They serve many authentic options and you should definitely try the mofongo and bistec encebollado (cube steak with onions).

El Jibarito is tucked away on a small side street in Old San Juan.

Casita Miramar

Casita Miramar has one of the best atmospheres. This colorful and vibrant restaurant serves delicious local cuisine and handcrafted cocktails.

This is a slightly pricier option, but the authentic and often creative dishes make it worth the extra money.

The USA east coast has great options for warm winter vacation ideas. Consider these destinations for your next winter getaway.

1. Puerto Rico

World class beaches and food are only a short flight away in Puerto Rico. Visit historic forts, walk Old San Juan, or tour Casa Bacardi to learn more about Puerto Rico’s rich history. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a day trip to the El Yunque National Forest. It’s the only rainforest managed by the US National Forest Service.

Although Puerto Rico is not a US state, it is a US territory and US citizens do not need a passport to travel there. For that reason, it’s a really easy travel destination and should not be overlooked.

Bonus: The US dollar is the official currency of Puerto Rico, so you won’t have to exchange money beforehand.

2. Key West, Florida

If you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere for your next winter vacation, you’ll find it in Key West, Florida. This tropical island city has something for everyone.

If you’ve already been to Disney and you’re looking to branch out you could try Universal Studios or Legoland. I highly recommend visiting the Hogsmeade attraction at Universal, if you’re a fan of Harry Potter.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re asking yourself where to travel for Christmas, head to the bayou to experience the magic of NOLA. Eat, shop, and stay right in the French Quarter if you like to be right in the action.

The Hawaiian islands are on nearly everyone’s bucket list and for good reason. It’s the perfect destination for solo adventures, a couple’s retreat, or a family vacation. The hardest part of this vacation will be when you have to leave.

There are so many great things to do in Hawaii including snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, hiking, golf, and so much more. This unique paradise has the most active volcanoes in the world and amazing whale watching.

Another perk to Mexico is that many parts of the trip are considerably cheaper due to the lower cost of living. Keep in mind, it’s not hard to run up the bill at the resorts that cater to tourists. You can travel here on a tight budget or luxuriously depending on you travel preferences.

Koh Phi Phi is still inexpensive compared to some destinations outside of Thailand, but is slightly higher compared to other Thailand locations.

How do you get to Koh Phi Phi Island?

How to get from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

The main ferry pier in Krabi is Klong Jirad Pier. It’s located about 30 minutes drive from the Krabi airport.

It takes the ferry about 1.5 hours to get from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi. You can book ferry tickets at the pier or do it online beforehand.

We booked through Expedia and it worked well. We were actually staying in Ao Nang, near Krabi, and the online booking included a free shuttle that picked us up from our hotel. It’s one less thing to coordinate.

How to get from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

Go at your own pace and take breaks to enjoy the sweeping views of the island as you climb. The workout will help you burn any excess calories from the restaurants and bars.

Start climbing in time to make it to the top for the sunset. It doesn’t take too long to get to the top, but you won’t want to miss it. Don’t forget your camera!

2. Relax on the beach

During the day, Phi Phi’s visitors flock to the beaches to relax and recover from the previous night’s fun. Loh Dalum Beach is the long, main beach where many of the hotels and restaurants are located. For that reason, it’s also the busiest beach.

Viking Cave – The Viking Cave is a naturally formed limestone cave with wall paintings. Note that you are allowed to walk in the cave, but you’ll get a great view from the boat making it worth the stop. Plus, it’s a good spot to see lots of fish in the water.

Bamboo Island – Bamboo Island is known for it’s beautiful white sand beach. You’ll can also admire the lizards and marine life.

Maya Bay – Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi Ley, is famous for it’s turquoise water, pristine beach, and being surrounded by limestone cliffs. It gained popularity after the film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

In recent years the coral and beach have suffered damage from the increase in tourism. For that reason, it was closed down temporarily to let the area recover, but has since reopened. Still it’s best to check with your guide or boat to see if the beach is accessible as it experienced other brief shutdowns throughout the past year.

7. Walk around Loh Dalum Bay bay during low tide

During low tide you can walk a couple hundred yards out into the bay at Loh Dalum Beach. You can watch the birds stalk crabs in the shallows, or play soccer on the now exposed sand with the locals.

Loh Dalum Beach is the main beach hub on Phi Phi. Sometimes it gets a little too busy, but if you can find a spot the view is great. Plus, you can get drinks at a beach bar or catch a fire show after dark. During low tide you can even walk out in the bay or partake in a game of soccer.

Long Beach

Long Beach faces southwest and tends to be less crowded than Loh Dalum. This beach also includes bungalows on the shore, some of which belong to the resorts. It’s possible to walk to the beach during the day, but not recommended. You have to walk over some rocks, or through small jungle trails that might make it difficult for some. It’s easier to catch a few minute ride on a long-tail boat.

Bamboo Beach

Bamboo Beach on Bamboo Island is one of the most picturesque beaches in the area. You’ll need to take a long-tail boat to get there, but it’s worth the ride. The island is more remote than Phi Phi which creates a calm setting. Enjoy a day of lounging, admiring the colorful fish, and watching the island’s lizards.

Is Koh Phi Phi safe?

Koh Phi Phi island is relatively safe. Crime exists everywhere, so it’s still a good idea to be alert at all times, and keep precious items tucked away. If you’re partaking in the party scene, it’s a good idea to stay in groups or don’t drink too much if you have a long walk back to your hotel. Phi Phi doesn’t have cars, so it’s all walking traffic.

Additionally, it was hit by a tsunami in 2004. There is always the chance that it could happen again. Like many coastal regions, this is a known risk.
